Filigree Engagement Rings, grown in light.

Open metalwork that looks hand-pierced. Filigree engagement rings carry lacy, scrolling patterns through the shoulders and gallery, the detail found on vintage and art deco rings. Novara's settings pair filigree with halos, milgrain and pavé. Metal and karat come first; the center, white or fancy pink, yellow, blue or green, is added in the following step.

Where the filigree sits

In certain designs the pattern fills the shoulders with pierced scrolls and leaves; on others it runs under the center as an openwork basket you see from the side. Shoulder filigree shows from above, while gallery work is a quieter detail. Look at the side photo before choosing.

Framed, single or trio

  • Halo: lab-grown diamond accents encircle the center on most designs, often edged in milgrain, for an antique filigree look.
  • Solitaire: the filigree band carries the center alone, so the metalwork leads.
  • Three stone and side stone: accents flank the center, an art deco line.

Shapes and metals

Princess, round, oval, cushion, Asscher and radiant centers suit the bulk of the range; heart, emerald, pear and marquise fit many. Metals are white, yellow or rose gold in 10K, 14K or 18K, platinum, and Silvadium, a tarnish-resistant sterling silver. Rose and yellow gold make the pierced pattern stand out; white metals keep it subtle.

Looking after openwork

Filigree gathers soap and lotion in its openings. A few minutes in lukewarm suds, then a baby toothbrush along the scrolls, clears it. Skip ultrasonic machines on fine metalwork, and remove the ring for weights, yard work and household chores.

FAQ

Filigree Engagement Rings: Common Questions

What is a filigree ring?

A filigree ring is decorated with delicate pierced metal formed into curls, leaves or lace-like motifs. On Novara's filigree engagement rings that pattern fills the shoulders or the basket beneath the center, often alongside milgrain, pavé or a ring of lab-grown diamond accents.

What is vintage filigree?

Vintage filigree is the delicate pierced metalwork seen on Edwardian and art deco era rings, when jewelers cut and engraved patterns into platinum and gold. Novara's settings recreate that look with scrolling shoulders and beaded milgrain, built new in gold, platinum or silver.

Are filigree rings more expensive?

Sometimes slightly, since detailed metalwork takes more work than a plain band. Novara's filigree settings start under $250, and most cost between about $800 and $1,400 for the setting alone. The center diamond you choose in the next step is priced separately.

What's the difference between filigree and milgrain?

Filigree is open, pierced metalwork shaped into patterns; milgrain is a beaded border running along an edge. Filigree adds lacy detail to shoulders or galleries, while milgrain outlines a halo or band. Many of these settings use both together for a fuller vintage look.
