Where the lacework appears

Halo, hidden halo or solitaire
Many vintage silver filigree rings combine openwork with a milgrain, bypass or hidden halo. Solitaire and three stone styles leave more lacework on show. Princess, cushion, Asscher, round, oval and radiant centers suit most designs.

Settings open under $250, and the middle of the range is about $300 to $500, center not included. That frees budget for a larger stone in a mounting that still reads antique.
Cleaning pierced metal
Openwork catches lotion and lint in every gap. Let the ring rest briefly in lukewarm, mildly soapy water, then work a fine brush through the openings and rinse. Fine silver wires can bend under strain, so remove the ring before lifting or heavy chores.
