Linked drops or a single stud
- Graduated drops: hearts that shrink or grow down a line, swaying with movement.
- Ribbon drop: a heart hung below a curved line, with a round accent at the top.
- Crossed stud: a heart at the center of baguette and round bars, close to the lobe.
Judging a heart-shaped stone
A well-cut heart has even lobes and a clean cleft, with a point that is neither too blunt nor too thin. Prongs at the point protect the sharpest part of the stone. In a drop, each heart should face the same way so the line reads straight down.
Karat and color of gold
Choose 10K, 14K or 18K gold. Yellow gold reads classic and warm, rose gold adds a blush to the outline, and white gold makes the stones appear icier. 14K gold heart earrings balance color and hardness for daily wear. Total weights start at 0.5 carat and run past 3 carats on the larger drops.
Wearing heart drops
Longer drops catch on scarves and collars, so fasten them last when dressing. Store them flat with links straight to avoid knots, and wash them now and then in lukewarm suds, brushing lightly around each prong.
